TEDxHRCOLLEGE

TEDxHRCollege is one of the most prestigious TEDx events in the financial capital of India, Mumbai. It is an independently organized event by the students of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics who firmly believe in the spirit of TED's mission-Ideas worth spreading.

TEDxHRCollege has been graced by speakers such as Mr. Niranjan Hiranandani (billionaire real-estate entrepreneur), Mrs. Alka Joshi (best selling author and a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick), and Ms. Nidhi Goyal (advisor to the UN Women Executive Director) among many others, who shared their ideas, experiences, and unique perspectives to an audience of college students, working professionals, and many more.

At TEDxHRCollege, we firmly believe that the stories we tell shape us to believe who we are, and this belief translates into who we become. Hence, the theme of this year's event is “Master of My Ship”. It is a one-day event that aims at bringing great minds together to give talks that are idea-focused on a wide range of subjects to foster wonder and inspiration and provoke learning.


ACTIVITIES 2023-2024

THEME REVEAL

January 16, 2024

TEDxHRCOLLEGE organized an offline theme reveal for their upcoming event in early 2024. The purpose of the event was to spread the word regarding the event’s theme for the year 2024 which is, “A Person Through People." This event involved asking students a question, “What are some of the qualities that you have picked up from someone who has influenced your life?”. A simple question, but one that forces you to introspect. The students were prompted to think about the people who have made them the persons that they are and envision incorporating these qualities into their future endeavours. Participants had the opportunity to express their thoughts on a board while each member of the team celebrated this reveal.

TEDxHRCollege x The Movement India

TEDxHR College collaborated with The Movement India, participating in The Movement’s initiative which involves mobilizing volunteer talent to educate children from the urban poor sector of society, majorly first-generation learners. As a part of this initiative, six volunteers, Kaavya Vaidyanathan, Andrea Sebastian, Akshadha Shreeram, Jeel Punmiya, Mahek Sanghvi and Tanya Daryani, representing TEDxHR College, visited the streets of Maharashtra Nagar, Mankhurd, where they played the role of Teaching Associates, assisting with the schooling of pre-primary and primary students. The volunteers engaged with the children, fostering a nurturing environment that encouraged curiosity and active participation in their learning journey. Through innovative teaching methods and personalized attention, they not only imparted academic knowledge but also instilled confidence and a sense of empowerment in these young minds, leaving a lasting impact on both the students and themselves

TEDxHR

March 9, 2024

TEDxHRCollege held its 9th edition at Garware Club House, Wankhede Stadium. Ms. Natasha Sharma, Mr. Atul Karwal, Anshula Kapoor, Rohit Raj, Mrs. Chhavi Mittal, Sam Koshy, and Shraddha Kamdar were the speakers. They discussed creativity, resilience, self-acceptance, decision-making, self-discovery, community service, and narrative power. The talks emphasized the significance of challenging norms, perseverance, and dedication in achieving one's aspirations. The event was a huge success and marked the end of TEDxHRCollege's 9th edition.

ACTIVITIES 2022-2023

THEME REVEAL

November 9, 2022         Venue: H.R. College of Commerce & Economics

TEDxHRCOLLEGE organized an offline theme reveal for their upcoming event in 2023. The event was organized to promote within the college, the theme for the year, which is “Master of My Ship”. This event involved asking students a simple question, “10 years down the lane, you are the master of your ship. If asked this today, how would you describe your then version?” The students were encouraged to think about their future selves and look forward to working to achieve all of their goals.

They could write their goals and ambitions on a board and answer a few simple questions related to the theme. The event was graced by Principal, Dr. Pooja Ramchandani, and Vice Principal, Dr. Navin Punjabi, who also shared their thoughts on the theme.

TEDxHRCOLLEGE X TEACH FOR INDIA

TEDxHRCollege organized ‘Step in to a Classroom’ in collaboration with Expotonvironment: Teach for India; a movement that highlights grassroot problems in the Indian educational system and makes education accessible to different strata of students.

As part of the initiative, members of the team visited The Worli Seaface BMC School where they assisted 4th grade students in a pen pal activity with the aim that it would foster speaking and writing skills in English. The honesty, innocence, kindness and inclusivity that members experienced was heartwarming. Members also realized that sustained intervention is the only way these children will benefit in the long run. Thus, what started off as an attempt to help students in their learning space ended with an experience filled with joy, laughter, and abundant love.

TEDXHRCOLLEGE TAKES OVER ‘SUNDAY STREETS’

January 8, 2023

TEDxHRCollege, on Sunday, January 8, 2023 joined the ‘Sunday Streets’ at Marine Drive, Mumbai, an initiative started by Mumbai Police to revive the ‘Spirit of Mumbai’. As part of the event, members of our team conducted several activities for people to enjoy including a game of human tic tac toe, digital bingo, doodling on the pavements, a live singing performance by team members and garba with the crowd! Owing to our theme ‘Master of My Ship’, people also wrote down things that they would want to achieve this year on chits.

IDEAS WORTH SPREADING

January 21, 2023         Venue: Cricket Club of India, Churchgate

TEDxHRCollege hosted its 8th edition this year at the Cricket Club of India. Licensed by TED, this independently organized event by the students of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics, upholds TED’s mission, ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. The theme for this year is ‘Master of My Ship’, the event aimed at encouraging attendees to have the conviction and grit to take control of their own lives.

The first speaker of the event was Mr. Pratham Mittal; an alumnus of Wharton University and founder of a unique practitioner-led higher education institution called ‘Masters’ Union’. His talk, ‘What Teaching Learning should be’, highlighted the problems in the Indian Educational system and offered solutions. He provided valuable insights into how it is important to ‘Teach to the problem and not the solution’.

Our next speaker for the day was Ms. Yamini Joshi. She is an actress and the co-founder of ‘Alfaaz’, a digital theatre platform. Through her talk, ‘3 Things Theatre Taught Me About Life’, she took pages from her time at theater school and applied them to life as a whole. She emphasized how, in life, our ‘WHY’ will always be our hero and urged members of the audience to trust their impulses and attach themselves to the process while detaching themselves from the result.

Mr. Arjun Vaidya, founder of Dr. Vaidya’s New Age Ayurveda, a venture capitalist, and the host of a podcast entitled, ‘Direct to a Billion Consumers’ was our next speaker for the day. His talk stressed the importance of communication, patience, and clearly defining responsibilities while working with family. While most people advise against business with family, he encouraged the audience to take a leap of faith with their family to create something they can be proud of.

Ms. Shalini Dutta, our fourth speaker for the day, is a tech professional and an ex-Teach for India fellow. She now runs an NGO, ‘Aftertaste’, which helps victims of domestic violence and poor women earn a living. Her talk, ‘Poverty, Women, and Freedom’ was an eye-opener that focused on life trajectories. She left the audience to ponder over how they could choose to use their privilege to create ripples of change in our society.

Our final speaker, Mr. Rij Eappen is a luxury influencer with 90,000 followers. He is part of the founding team of a very interesting startup around social currency, WYLD. According to him, everybody is an influencer and doesn’t necessarily have to be paid to do so. Through his talk, he voiced the functioning of social currency and urged the audience to find their niche, and create something meaningful in their own authentic voice to build social capital.

The event sought to encourage networking and getting people out of their comfort zones by using a number of ideas like the meet and greet session, innovative activity with ID cards and constant reminders through networking tips. The event also saw attendance of Miss Malani founder, Malini Agarwal, representatives from Teach For India organization among others

The Meet and Greet followed by the High Tea officially marked the end of the 8th edition of TEDxHRCollege. The team went on to celebrate what was a successful event after months of deliberation, commitment, and hard work.

SPOTLIGHT

October 8, 2021

TEDxHRCollege organized a 'Spotlight' exclusively event for H.R. College students and teachers to share their inspiring journeys.

This event was the brainchild of the Marketing team of TEDxHRCollege, headed by Stuti Karia, and was held on Zoom. Srishti Tyagi, the Head Organizer and Licensee of TEDxHRCollege 2021-22 commenced the evening by delivering the welcome address, and the Head Curator Yash Rajani, shed light on the theme of this year – The Stories We Tell. The Co-Organizers for the year, Vaishnavi Singh and Shuchi Modi, along with Shresth Toshniwal were the stunning hosts for the evening. Joining them was Dr. Chandani Bhattacharjee, the faculty advisor for TEDxHRCollege.

The evening kicked off with the Principal Dr. Pooja Ramchandani's inspirational story titled 'Life is a train journey.’ which had a lasting impact on the audience and many were left teary-eyed. The audience consisting of students and faculty members was in awe of Dr. Pooja's courage and resilience and many faculty members shared their experience of working with Dr. Ramchandani with the others. This talk laid the perfect foundation for the next set of performances that followed.

The talented students of H.R. College then took over and they managed to entice the audience while the spotlight was on them. The line-up consisted of singers, dancers, musicians, and storytellers, who were keen to share their journeys with the rest. The theme of Spotlight - 'It's your time to shine.' was truly apt, as it gave the exceptional talents of H.R. College; a perfect stage to voice their thoughts and share their talents with others. The event culminated with a vote of thanks, which was delivered by Shuchi Modi.

FLASHMOB

December 21, 2021

The TEDxHRCollege organizing committee had the brilliant idea of arranging a flash mob - coordinated dance routine in public. Maintaining social distancing, choreographing the dance routine, putting in multiple practices, and doing all of this in less than 4 hours was quite the task. Our choreographer did a fantastic job in managing the 20 odd excited college students. The flash mob was recorded and shared on social media, and TEDxHRCollege got considerable exposure from the views.

SHARK TANK

February 5, 2022

TEDxHRCollege hosted “Shark Tank,” as an initiative to give the students of our college a platform to share their entrepreneurial 'ideas worth spreading.' The online event saw the elegant Ms. Masumi Mewawala, a fashion designer by profession, and the witty CA Adil Harianawalla, a financial consultant at KPMG as the 'sharks.'

The event ended with Aayan Ali Shah Prem Suthar bagging the first podium for 'The Kool School' - an idea that the sharks & audience resonated the most with!

TEDxHRCollege

March 5, 2022 World Trade Center, Cuffe Parade

TEDxHRCollege came back this year with its seventh edition at the World Trade Center. This is an independently organised event by the students of H.R. College under the license issued by TED. This event is organised in the spirit of TED's mission, 'Ideas worth Spreading'.

The first speaker of the event was Ms. Shabnam Nasimi. She is the Executive Director of Conservative Friends of Afghanistan, a group that exists to promote understanding and support for Afghanistan in the United Kingdom. Her talk, presented in the form of a pre-recorded video, highlighted how the cost of war is female. She urged people to remember Afghanistan and the suffering of women there.

Our next speaker was Ms. Bhavna Rajpal, an advocate of Sindhi culture who gave a talk on talk “Embracing My Sindhi Self.” A Young India Scholar, gold medallist in English Literature at the University of Mumbai, and a doctoral candidate at CNRS, EHESS in Paris, Ms. Rajpal gave a phenomenal speech on Sindhi culture and her journey of embracing it. She connected with the audience at a personal level and they were left to ponder over how they can save their "dying culture.”

The third speaker for the day was Mr. Suveer Bajaj - an alumnus of H. R. College of Commerce and Economics who started the now award-winning and renowned digital agency FoxyMoron when he was just 19. His talk, presented in the form of a pre-recorded video, captured his unconventional journey of becoming an 'entrepreneur' at 19. Co-founding one of India's early digital advertising agencies Foxymoron, Suveer undoubtedly mapped the blueprint for digital in India. All lauded Suveer’s insights on why it’s ‘cool’ to ‘Be Your Own Shark Tank’.

The fourth speaker - Mr. Nimesh Kampani, an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, a C.A. by profession has decades of experience in the banking and financial services sector. His speech was about how he puts the use of his passion and how today it is his profession. He shared how he tried his hand at different things, but he never really discovered his true passion - “Ikigai” as he said. Once he did which was mentoring people and startups, he excelled in life. This for him was “making passion work”.

The next speaker for the day, Ms. Depinder Chhibber, an Indian chef, known for her participation in Masterchef Australia S13, took over the platform via a pre-recorded talk and reminisced about the time she moved to Australia and how her relationship with Indian food brought her peace and comfort. She concluded - Home is food for the Indian Diaspora.

Ms. Shabnam Minwalla the next speaker is a popular writer of children's books in India. She regularly conducts workshops in schools around the country and has been a speaker at numerous literature festivals. She shared her “Lessons from the Rear View Mirror”. She talked about Colaba's history filtered through an artist's imagination.

Mr. Jack Randall, best known for hosting his television series, “Out There with Jack Randall” (Nat Geo WILD, Disney+) was the next speaker. In his pre-recorded talk, he mentioned how each of us should be local zoologists. He urged the audience to step outside and familiarise themselves with the wild. “Our Animals are homeless” - he stressed. He left the listeners contemplating as he spoke the words “Do we want to be the generation that saves our planet or the one that destroys it?”

Mr. Jasbir Singh Solanki, the next speaker, is an Armed Forces Veteran and a global business leader. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Mahindra Defence System Limited. He was here to steer the ship and take us through his life in the Navy. His talk gave us a ride through his adventures in the Navy, his times aboard INS Trangini around the world through terrifying storms and choppy seas, and finally how to overcome self-doubt in testing times.

Our last speaker, Mr. Harshvardhan Joshi, is an Indian millennial mountaineer and a sustainability advocate. He has climbed six mountains of altitude 6000m and above in his mountaineering career which started in 2016. The way he narrated his journey from Mumbai at 20ft above sea level to the top of Everest at over 29000ft was simply extraordinary, and the pictures he shared led the audience to imagine and visualize the challenges mountaineers face along with the monumental beauty of nature they witness. He revealed that he still climbed the summit after battling Covid-19.

ACTIVITIES 2020-2021

TEDxHRCOLLEGE 2020

TEDxHRCollege 2020 was a virtual event this year. In light of the existing Covid-19, the team took a deviation from the usual live event and hosted a Youtube Premier on their Youtube page for all nine of the speakers. The YouTube premier was conducted for three weekends, starting from September 26, 2020, followed by October 3 and October 10, 5:30 pm onwards.

The TED speakers this year were distinguished individuals from diversified walks of life, each highly accomplished in their fields. The speakers ranged from entrepreneurs and industrialists to people of science, Ayurveda, and even authors. The overall theme for TedxHRCollege 2020 was 'Minds Wide Open' and each speaker expressed their expertise, knowledge, experiences, and views on each of their talk- topics.
