Student United Way of H.R. College

Student United Way of H.R. College (SUW) is a student body extension of United Way (Mumbai); an International NGO that focuses on social welfare, especially in the fields of education, health, and environment.

Students from the college volunteer for the various events the NGO conducts around the city. SUW conducts several general body meetings throughout the year to prepare for the calendar of events and chalks out a concrete plan to implement the projects in the pipeline.

PROJECT ज्ञान

July 8, 2023 - August 13, 2023

The SUW Club of HR College and Sparkling Wings NGO collaborated to create a 6-week child education program for underprivileged children. The program aimed to bridge the educational gap and provide quality learning opportunities. The program was structured as 6 Sundays, with interactive sessions, interactive learning methods, and specialized workshops. The program improved children's educational knowledge, confidence, social skills, and teamwork abilities, and increased awareness about education and holistic development.

DADAR BEACH CLEAN-UP DRIVE

The Students United Way (SUW) Club and the Nature Club of H.R. College collaborated to organize a beach clean-up drive aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation and the importance of maintaining a clean coastal ecosystem. The primary objective of the drive was to remove idols of Ganpati after immersion from the beach, creating a cleaner coastal environment. This initiative made a significant impact on both the environment and the community, promoting a more sustainable environment.

HELMET 4 LIFE

December 1st,2023         Participants: 60+

The SUW Club and NSS Unit of H.R. College , organized the “Helmet for Life” event, emphasizing the importance of road safety. The event aimed to encourage responsible driving habits and promote a safety culture among students. The event recognized students with driving licenses, awarding certificates and helmets as a symbol of their commitment to safe road practices and responsible driving. The collaborative effort of United Way Mumbai, SUW Club, and NSS Unit demonstrated a shared dedication to raising awareness and advocating for a safer driving environment. The event successfully brought attention to the critical role helmets play in safeguarding lives, encouraging a positive shift towards responsible driving behaviors within the student community.

INTERCOLLEGIATE WIN

January 3&4, 2024         Attendees: 15

Discidium, the inter and intra collegiate business and economics event held on January 3 and 4, witnessed enthusiastic participation from students. The event provided a dynamic platform for intellectual engagement, fostering healthy competition and collaboration. A standout accomplishment for our SUW club members came in the form of securing the first prize in the Impact Innovators competition. This category challenged participants to showcase their ability to innovate and create solutions that have a meaningful impact on both business and societal fronts. Our team’s success reflected a profound understanding of innovative business practices and a commitment to make a positive difference. The overall performance of SUW club was commendable, as we clinched the prestigious position of second runner-up in the entire event. This achievement underscored the consistent dedication and academic prowess of our members in navigating complex business and economic challenges. SUW not only gave fierce competition but also networked with students, shared knowledge, and gained insightful information.

Tata Mumbai Marathon

January 21,         Volunteers: 20

Student United Way HRC with its parent organization United Way Mumbai represented H.R. College at the Tata Mumbai Marathon. The Mumbai Marathon is an annual international marathon held on the third Sunday of January every year. It is India's largest charity platform for non-profit organizations to raise funds. The event, was held with Tata's commitment to promote health and community engagement. The marathon is amongst the top 10 marathons in the world.

The SUW Club volunteers were strategically stationed at key points, promoting motivational slogans and cheering runners towards the finish line. Their presence made the marathon a celebration of individual achievements and collective support. They also participated in outdoor and management activities, such as medal distribution, goodies distribution, and guiding runners.

SUW HRC was honored to volunteer to organize a large-scale event, highlighting the importance of community involvement and the positive energy it brings to the success of such endeavors.

West Khetwadi Upper Primary School

Students United Way (SUW) Club and Discidium committee members collaborated with West Khetwadi Upper Primary School. Volunteers shared their knowledge through teaching activities, including math, science, language arts, and creative pursuits. The interaction extended beyond academics, fostering a holistic approach to education. The workshop was successful and created lasting memories for all involved. The school principal commended the event and expressed eagerness for future collaborations. The event exemplifies the collaborative potential of partnerships in positively influencing underprivileged children's education.

ACTIVITIES 2022-2023

PROJECT दवा

August 15 - September 15, 2022         Volunteers: 15

Medicines are an essential element in alleviating suffering. Project दवा, a medicine donation drive, was started with an aim to bridge the gap between the needs and the limited capacity of individuals to purchase expensive medicines and also help them ease their sufferings and get proper treatment.

SUW HRC successfully closed Project ‘दवा’ with a collection of 150+ unused/leftover medicines for cough and cold, blood pressure, diarrhea, headache, diabetes etc. The medicines were donated to the Manav Jyot Trust, located in Mulund.

COLLABORATION WITH BRINGLE UK & INDIA

August 19-21, 2022         Volunteers: 14

Bringle UK & India and Vardaan4u (NGO) did a non-stop 48 hours World Record Charity event and worked towards transforming India into a self-sustainable and financially independent economy leading to zero- unemployment. Student United Way HRC helped them in achieving their goal of 1 million plus attendees and create a world record for their online charity event - “Sone ki Chidiya ko Jagao” (Awakening the Golden Bird).

COLLABORATION WITH V CARE FOUNDATION

November 19, 2022

V Care Foundation is a non-governmental organization with the objective to provide free medical, financial & emotional support to cancer patients, cancer survivors and their family members, through their carefully designed interventions.

Student United Way HRC collaborated with them to motivate the young minds of age group 5-14 years by organizing some light-hearted activities. A session was also conducted in their school to teach them the importance of money management.

THALASSEMIA AWARENESS SEMINAR

December 1, 2022         Attendees: 45+

Student Unite Way HRC in collaboration with RCBM and Red Boys Foundation conducted a seminar to spread awareness amongst the youngsters about Thalassemia, under Project Hope. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that causes the body to have less hemoglobin and fewer red blood cells than normal. The seminar included a detailed and eye-opening session by the speaker who gave us great insights about the disease. A few thalassemia patients shared their journey, throwing light on the problems that many patients like them face and how the youth of the country can help many like them.

TATA MUMBAI MARATHON

January 14-15, 2023         Volunteers: 21

Student United Way HRC with its parent organization United Way Mumbai represented H.R. College at the Tata Mumbai Marathon. The Mumbai Marathon is an annual international marathon held on the third Sunday of January every year. It is India's largest charity platform for non-profit organizations to raise funds.

For 18 glorious years it has been the pride of the city and country, a beacon of hope and generosity from Mumbai to the world. The marathon is amongst the top 10 marathons in the world. During the two-day event, the volunteers were involved in many outdoor and management activities such as distribution the refreshments, making the participants play fun games, organizing teams and guiding the runners.

PROJECT विस्तारक

February 8, 2023

Student United Way HRC launched its new initiative called “Project विस्तारक”. This long-term project aims to expand the reach of small and traditional businesses by helping them list their products on various e-commerce platforms.

This service can be availed by businesses run by those underprivileged communities who wish to promote and sell handmade and traditional products.

SUNDAY STREET ACTIVITY

SUW HRC made a small contribution to Sunday Streets Mumbai in Marine Drive. Several fun activities like giving free hugs, conducting a session of real talk with people where they had to pick up a chit containing a question and then answer that question honestly.

The questions in the chits ranged from How are you feeling today? How was your day? What is your biggest regret? Something you would like to change? People were also given the option of pinning their thoughts on a board. The main aim was to create awareness about mental health. Thus, this activity was conducted to make people feel loved and wanted and provide them with a space to open up or write about their feelings or something they want to talk about but don't often get time or the opportunity to do so. It was indeed an incredible, fun-filled, light-hearted morning where everyone returned home with memories worth cherishing.

Student United Way in collaboration with Yuva Tourism Club of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics won trophy of “Best Business Strategy” at “BAZAAR’23” an event organised by GEMS club of H.R. College. Participation in Bazaar enhanced entrepreneurship skills and provided opportunity for students to generate income and employment.

THE TALENT SHOW

August 3, 2021

The Talent Show was an event that highlighted the talents of specially-abled children in the fields of art, dance, singing, and fashion. The marketing of the event was done by making flyers, which were posted on social media accounts, and by sending messages to various college groups.

The performers whom we like to refer to as our “special ones” are a part of NGOs like Santosh Institute or part of special schools like Swami Brahmanand Prathisthan. These institutes extended their entire support in ensuring the smooth functioning of the event.

HEARTATHON

September 29, 2021

Heartathon was an event conducted on World Heart Day, to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy heart. Exercise is one the best ways to ensure a healthy heart and the event focused on this aspect.

The participants were required to download the google fit app and walk for a minimum of 10 minutes. On completion of the task, they clicked their pictures and uploaded the same on the google form provided. The walk was chosen as a task to make people realise that exercise does not mean going to the gym, but a few normal things that we can do from our home.

GROWING GREENS

October 16, 2021

The habit of growing and maintaining plants instills in each a sense of responsibility towards nurturing life and protecting the environment. The idea of growing one's vegetables with the vegetables and fruit leftovers is what gave shape to this event. In this event, every participant was encouraged to grow plants with the leftovers that would otherwise reach the dustbin.

To help the participants a few posts containing tips, do's & don'ts were also posted which made it easier for people who are new to gardening. Every participant uploaded his or her picture while planting and the same was made into a collage later posted on the Instagram account. The event received 108 responses and 157 plants were grown.

ROAD SAFETY: TWO WHEELS ONE LIFE

United Way Mumbai has been implementing Training on Two Wheels One Life under the aegis of United for Road Safety. The project aims at educating and sensitizing the youth to become responsible and safe riders.

An online session was conducted through the Zoom platform, lasting for 3 hours, and had two phases the pre-test and the post-test. All participants were made to fill in both forms and upon successful completion; all participants received a certificate jointly issued by United Way Mumbai and the National Safety Council - Maharashtra.

WEBINAR ON MARINE POLLUTION

December 2, 2021 Participants: 23

United Way Mumbai has been conducting and educating people about marine pollution for a long time now, this time we joined their initiative and conducted a webinar in collaboration with United Way.

The webinar was well structured and detailed, the speaker Mr. Tushar Warang being well versed with the facts, was able to address the questions of the students. Various facts were brought to our attention such as a piece of plastic lives for 450 years under the ocean, the consequence being a loss of various marine lives. Eutrophication is another such phenomenon that causes depletion in the level of oxygen underwater.

To mitigate the rampant levels of marine pollution all that we need to do is take small steps, make these changes a part of our daily life and help our oceans.

All participants were required to fill out a Pre-Test form and post the webinar was made to fill out the Post-Test form. Upon successful submission, the same participants received their certificates issued by United Way Mumbai

TWO WHEELS ONE LIFE – ROAD SAFETY

December 12 - 20, 2021 Participants: 21

Continuing the spirit of raising awareness about road safety, United Way Mumbai organized 3 online activities to spread awareness among all people from various age groups and backgrounds. Participants from the Student United Way were given the tasks, and upon successful completion, every participant will be entitled to receive a certificate and trophy issued by United Way Mumbai.

The first task was a quiz through a google form comprising various basic road safety questions to test the knowledge and awareness of the participants. In the second task, all participants were required to raise awareness through social media platforms by sharing posters given by United Way Mumbai. In the third and final task, all participants were required to make a poster on paper about Road Safety and share the same.

PROJECT शिक्षा

January 19 - 27, 2022 Participants: 70

A donation drive aimed at encouraging primary education among children and encouraging them to enroll themselves in Government schools. All participants carried out this donation drive in an individual capacity.

The event started with the circulation of PR Messages and posters to various WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms. Students were encouraged to take part and even the slightest contribution was appreciated. A total of 387 books, notebooks, and school supplies were donated across five states and covering 10 cities in the country.

Primary education is a fundamental right of every child but only 54% are aware of the same, PROJECT शिक्षा was primarily for raising more awareness through conducting a donation drive. The social media platform Instagram was used to highlight the importance of primary education and the rights available.

We aim to conduct more such events that raise awareness and help those in need!

EARTH BALLS

February 10-20, 2022

The event was organized to spread awareness about the concept of seed balls and to promote the planting of trees. Seed balls are seeds wrapped in soil, which can be thrown in places where trees are likely to grow. The major advantage of seed balls is that it lets nature take its course.

Together with 44 participants, we were able to make and dispose of 356 seed balls containing a variety of 10 seeds in various gardens, parks, barren land, etc.

CAMPAIGN CHIDIYA

February 22-28, 2022 Participant: 34

Campaign Chidiya was conducted to encourage bird feeding and giving back to nature. The campaign was conducted for 7 days and participants were motivated each day with a message and reminder to undertake the bird feeding activity.

Participants shared pictures of the food they kept for the birds and a few were even able to capture and befriend a few birds.

HEPATITIS B &C WEBINAR

March 10, 2022

United Way, Mumbai in collaboration with the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi, conducted a national Webinar on Prevention and Control of Hepatitis B &C. This webinar was aimed at raising awareness about Hepatitis and its various kind.

We have all heard about Hepatitis B but the factors that cause the same, the symptoms, and the various other side effects that Hepatitis B has, were discussed. Specialists and doctors from the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences explained everything in simple terms and understandable ways. For better understanding, a Q&A round was also conducted, where doubts were addressed and cleared.

All the participants received certificates issued by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi. Apart from students from the Student United Way Club of H.R. College, their participants were from various colleges, universities, and medical schools.

ACTIVITIES 2020-2021

ONE OF A KIND
August 6, 7 & 8, 2020

A series of webinars called One of a Kind were conducted by Student United Way with an aim to normalize the so-called taboos in our society and let people know how mental health, LGBTQIA+ community and COVID-19 survivors are anything but taboo. The event was promoted via WhatsApp and Instagram and the forms were circulated online so that people can fill them up to attend these sessions. Mental Health Wellness
August 6, 2020

An interactive session on student’s mental health was conducted by Dr. Rituparna Ghosh, Clinical and Neuropsychologist, who explained how Covid has increased the stress levels among the students, also said that students should not hesitate to visit a psychologist if they feel depressed.

LGBTQIA+ community
August 7, 2020

A session discussing that we are all unique and valid. “Walk into a room like a Queen”- those were Alex’s exact words to us when we asked how to be self-confident in what we are. LGBTQIA+ rights are hot button topics in today’s society. Be proud of yourself is what he advised everyone. He shared his story of coming out of the closet. The Drag Queen, Alex Mathew A.K.A Maya, who is a TEDx speaker and a LGBTQIA+ influencer.

COVID-19 Warriors
August 8, 2020

The guest speakers of the webinar on Covid-19 Warriors were Dr. Shailesh Wagle, a Community Investment Manager at United Way Mumbai and Mehar Bhagat, a COVID-19 survivor who is a wellness coach and dietician.

Dr. Shailesh talked about COVID-19 and its symptoms, and the seriousness of COVID-19 was discussed. He explained how to wash hands, sanitize properly, use and dispose of masks and gloves etc.

Mehar shared her experience of how it is difficult to return to society because people judge and avoid her just because she was a victim of COVID. She also told us she used to eat lots of fruits, green vegetables etc. and her routine of exercising daily to keep her body fit.

COVID LETTERS OF LOVE
August 9-16, 2020

The members of Student United Way started a campaign called COVID Letters of Love to show gratitude to the COVID frontline workers by writing handwritten letters and displaying each of them via social media. This initiative was dedicated to all COVID warriors who braved emergency rooms when no one dared to step out, to all those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Messages and posters were created to promote this event via our Instagram page and WhatsApp. We created a hashtag for our event, i.e. #dilsethankyou.

CHASING REAL
September 18-24, 2020

The main aim of the event was to normalize all the imperfections imposed by the society, begin a filter free era, accept ourselves just the way we are and chase the real us. We asked people to send in their no-filter pictures via Google form so as to show society how beautiful we are even without filters. 188 people accepted this challenge and posted their pictures by using hashtags and letting go of their insecurities.

THE TREE PLANTATION CAMPAIGN
September 29 - October 5, 2020

The members of Student United Way commenced The Tree Plantation Campaign to make this world a better place by focusing on the importance of plants in our lives.The event was promoted on Instagram and WhatsApp by means of posters and messages. We requested people to send in their pictures and videos of planting, maintaining hygiene and social distancing, considering the pandemic. We created two hashtags for our campaign: #plantspreachlife and #ihelpsuwhrgogreen so that people can use them when they post pictures and videos. Our target was to plant 200 greens but with the help of many we were able to plant 250+ greens.

TWO WHEELS, ONE LIFE.

The members of Student United Way of H.R. College volunteered to promote road safety awareness among people. United Way, Mumbai, which is an extension of the International NGO United Way, conducted this event to sensitize maximum people on this important topic.

This awareness campaign was conducted in three stages, which then led to the fourth one. The volunteers were asked to do the following:

1. Road Safety Webinar - November 6, 2020

Attend a webinar conducted by United Way, Mumbai regarding road safety so that the volunteers get a fair idea of how to promote road safety.

2. Road Safety Quiz - January 24, 2021

A quiz prepared by United Way, Mumbai was distributed among people, through the volunteers, to gauge the knowledge of road safety in the minds of public.

3. Road Safety Poster Making Programme - February 3-5, 2021

Ask people to make at least one handmade poster on the topic of road safety. With this activity, road safety is etched in their memory and this helps people to be alert.

4. Road Safety Social Media Engagement Programme - February 24-25, 2021

Promote six digital posters of road safety prepared by United Way, Mumbai; on the social media handles, so that maximum people can reflect over road safety and the important role it plays in our lives.

PROJECT MUSKAN
April 1-6, 2021

The members of Student United Way of H.R. College launched Project Muskan with the primary purpose of providing some essentials for the underprivileged during the COVID-19 pandemic, by donating essentials and contributing towards their betterment.

The SUW members donated essentials such as clothes, stationery, sanitizers and masks to NGOs and charities near their homes.

ORIENTATION CEREMONY 2019

The orientation commenced with the President of the club Ms. Shreya Kokare welcoming all the new members of the club with immense warmth and pleasure. She interacted with all the students and also gave a brief introduction about the club. Following which a presentation introduced all the core members and faculty in-charge Ms. Kanupriya Sharma to the students.

MAHIM BEACH CLEAN UP DRIVE

October 22, 2019

The members of the SUW were privileged to be a part of the Clean Up Drive by United Way Mumbai held at Mahim Beach.Putting on the masks and pulling up gloves, the students started the clean-up full of energy and beaming with enthusiasm.

VISIT TO THE COASTAL AND MARINE BIODIVERSITY CENTRE, AIROLI

Ms. Pooja, a representative of United Way Mumbai informed the participants about mangrove plantations, the different types of mangrove species and their role in the ecosystem. She also mentioned the areas covered by mangroves in Mumbai and discussed how Navi Mumbai survived the 2004 floods because of them. The students were delighted to see the picturesque descriptions of the flora and fauna present in the centre.

ROAD TO SAFETY

December 20 & 21, 2019

The members of the SUW were honored to be a part of “ROAD TO SAFETY' event held at Mulund, Airoli Toll Naka booth. The volunteers put all their efforts to win the race of making people aware about safe driving. This event helped to enhance the feeling of social responsibility of the students to motivate them to work for such issues and spread awareness wherever possible.

TATA MUMBAI MARATHON 2020

January 19, 2020

The SUW members were privileged to be a part of one of the most popular events of Mumbai - TATA MUMBAI MARATHON and were happy to contribute toward this cause. UNITED WAY team actively took part in the marathon and chanted slogans on "Road to Safety" to generate awareness among the viewers for the same. The team wore green reflector jackets and were recognised and highlighted by 27 media channels.

UNICEF RED DOT CHALLENGE

The Red Dot Challenge was started by UNICEF India. It aims at busting myths and promoting facts on menstrual hygiene, collectively inspiring women and girls,men and boys, to candidly talk about menstruation.

MENSTRUAL HYGIENE WEBINAR

May 28, 2020

The Menstrual Hygiene Webinar was conducted in affiliation with United Way by Reshma Nakte (nutritionist) from United Way Mumbai on Menstrual Hygiene Day. It was also successful in creating awareness about the types of menstrual hygiene materials (sanitary products) available in the market, how to use them as well as comparisons among them. E-certificates were provided to all the attendees by United Way Mumbai.

HEPATITIS B WEBINAR

The Hepatitis B webinar was conducted in affiliation with United Way Mumbai by Rakesh Gamare from United Way Mumbai. Every year United Way Mumbai conducts a Hepatitis B campaign which includes a training session and an awareness session. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, only the training session was conducted.

WEBINAR ON ROAD TO SAFETY

June 8, 2020

The webinar was conducted in affiliation with United Way Mumbai (NGO) by Mr. Karan from the Road to Safety team at United Way Mumbai. The topic of the webinar was “Training on two-wheeler safe riding” under the project “Two Wheels One Life” managed by GRSP. The project aims to educate and sensitize the youth to become safer and responsible two-wheeler riders.
