MATH CLUB

The Math Club is an umbrella organization for mathematics-related activities open to all students. A community of people who love Math, an environment where one experiences the joy of playing with numbers. The Club organizes events which not only help to develop the aptitude of the students for Math but also decrease their fear of numbers and symbols. It helps students to explore themselves, do a reconnaissance of who they are and allows them to learn and grow.


ACTIVITIES 2023-2024

INTERCOLLEGIATE ORGANISED: CO-ORDINATE ZERO - WHERE MATH MEETS MYSTERY

The MATH CLUB of HR College hosted the “Co-ordinate Zero” analytical criminal hunt event. The event aimed to showcase participants’ analytical and logical reasoning skills while unravelling mathematical mysteries to catch the elusive murderer.

Structured as a team competition, 14 teams participated, each comprising of a team leader and a coordinator. Teams embarked on a journey starting from HR College itself, receiving location hints to solve puzzles and reach the murderer's hideout. Participants were permitted to use three hints and a lifeline to skip location visits. Capturing their journey through photos and videos earned extra points.

All 14 teams exhibited enthusiasm and enjoyed the hunt. Refreshments sponsored by Starbucks Churchgate, Mojoco, and Alpha8 awaited their return. The closing ceremony featured addresses from Principal, Dr. Pooja Ramchandani; teacher-in-charge, Mrs. Vijaylaxmi Suvarna; and the Math Club’s core members. The top three teams received well-deserved accolades.

Principal Dr. Pooja Ramchandani expressed delight in the club's growth, commending this successful event as a significant milestone. The Math Club looks forward to hosting more such engaging events in the future, embracing new challenges and reaching new heights.

Career Building Way Ahead

October 4th, 2023

The Math Club hosted a captivating webinar via Zoom titled "Career Building Way Ahead" on October 4th, 2023. The session, featuring Arti Padwal, a Senior Australia / NZ Counselor, was designed to guide participants towards successful career paths. Prof. Vijayalaxmi Suvarna, the teacher in charge, and our club's president set the stage with insightful speeches on growing careers and future opportunities. Honorable Principal Dr. Pooja Ramchandani shared perspectives on future careers. The vice president of the math club later on welcomed the keynote speaker. Arti Padwal shared expert insights on career opportunities in Australia and New Zealand, providing nuanced understandings of the job markets and invaluable tips for professional success.The webinar's key highlights included expert insights, motivating success stories, and a dedicated Q&A session. In summary, the Math Club's "Career Building Way Ahead" webinar, with 45 participants, proved commendable in equipping attendees with crucial insights and tools for their future endeavors. The robust Q&A session exemplified the club's commitment to providing relevant and tailored information.

Math Club X ICHR Mathletics Fest Report

We are delighted to announce that Math Club X ICHR participated in the Mathletics fest hosted by KJ Somaiya College. The fest included 8 events involving the use of maths. A total of 10 participants from our college participated in all the events. The highlight of our participation was the outstanding performance in the Anomaly Wars event, where our team secured a commendable 2nd place, showcasing their exceptional mathematical prowess. Their dedication, teamwork, and mathematical acumen were evident throughout the competition, earning them well-deserved recognition. The collaborative effort and passion for mathematics displayed by the team truly exemplify the spirit of our club. The club looks forward to more opportunities to showcase their mathematical prowess in future events.

EXCEL WITH AI WORKSHOP

The Excel AI Workshop, organized by the Math Club of HR College in collaboration with DataSkills, aimed to propel Excel skills into the AI era. The workshop targeted HR and Finance professionals, offering them an opportunity to explore advanced Excel and PowerPoint tools with the assistance of ChatGPT's interactive capabilities. The workshop consisted of online sessions conducted via Zoom on January 30th and February 14th, 2024. These sessions attracted a total of 78 eager learners who actively participated in hands-on demos and practical exercises. Participants delved into various aspects of Excel and PowerPoint, leveraging AI integration to enhance their proficiency. Through interactive assistance from ChatGPT, attendees gained insights into advanced features and techniques, enabling them to optimize their workflows and enhance productivity in their respective roles.

Number Ninja's

The Math Club of H.R. College hosted the 11th Edition of their flagship intercollegiate event, Number Ninjas on the 15th of February, 2023 with participation from esteemed colleges of Mumbai, namely, Narsee Monjee College, Kishinchand Chellaram College, KJ Somaiya College, Mulund College of Commerce and Ramnarain Jhunjhunwala College. The fest took place offline within the college premises and 60+ students attended it. This fest was undoubtedly a captivating journey into the boundless realms of puzzles, auctions, math relay, and share market. The participants were engrossed in the symphony of intellect, where the beauty of math converged with the thrill of discovery. It was a celebration of curiosity, innovation, and the infinite possibilities within the world of numbers.

BHN Elderly Care

March 10, 2024

Students from the Math Club at HR College of Commerce and Economics visited the BHN Elderly Home in Andheri. This facility is dedicated to providing comprehensive care and assistance to senior citizens, offering comfortable living arrangements, communal spaces, recreational activities, and medical services. Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by both the staff and residents of the home. In addition to engaging in activities like antakshari and passing the parcel to uplift their spirits and provide companionship, we also distributed snacks. It was heartening to witness the residents' enjoyment as they participated in the games and shared snacks with us. In summary, our visit to the BHN Elderly Home was a fulfilling experience that emphasized the importance of empathy and compassion in elderly care. We extend our gratitude to the staff and residents for their hospitality and commit to supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being and dignity of senior citizens.

STATISTICS QUIZ

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation organized a Statistics Quiz to commemorate 75 years of independence as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Mr. Rachit Aswani and Mr. Dhruv Jain, representing HR College’s Math Club, participated in the event. The event aimed to raise awareness about official statistics and educate the youth about India’s official statistics system.

BEACH CLEAN-UP

February 26, 2023         Attendees:15

Math Club in collaboration with Research Cell and B.Com. Committee organized a beach cleanup at Girgaon Chowpatty. The event helped increase awareness about keeping the beaches clean and how plastics in particular harm aquatic life. The participants filled up 20 biodegradable trash bags and disposed them off properly at the garbage pickup truck. With strong willpower and enthusiasm, the participants did their bit and left the beach clean and beautiful.

The Math Club organized an inter collegiate treasure hunt called “Mumbai, Math and Memories”. 31 teams consisting of 4 members participated in this event. In the first round, participants had to solve mathematical questions in order to unlock encrypted PDFs.

Each PDF revealed the location that the team had to go next. Once they reached their location through the given clues, the participants had to perform certain tasks such as garba, planks, etc. The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony and felicitation of all winners.

Math Club conducted the 10th edition of its flagship intercollegiate fest ‘Number Ninjas’ for the year 2022-23. With large participation and a variety of events, ‘Number Ninjas’ was highly successful in making mathematics interesting.

POWER BI CERTIFICATE COURSE
February 12 to May 1, 2022 Enrolment: 62

Math Club of H.R. College in association with Data skills, Hyderabad conducted a 30 Hours Certificate Course on Power BI, a business analytics service by Microsoft. The Power BI course was conducted under the guidance of Mr. Karthik Dale, a corporate trainer, Consultant, and Founder of Data skills. The course started in February with classes conducted on weekends for the convenience of the students as well as working professionals.

Power BI is the need of the hour with its practicality and industry-level application and the Math Club is honoured to have conducted such a great course in collaboration with Data Skills.

TRI'MATH'LON
October 1 & 2, 2021

Math Club of H.R. College organized a National Level Fest - TRI'MATH'LON consisting of three rounds with themes of swimming, cycling, and marathon built around the idea of an actual triathlon. The events witnessed huge participation from various prestigious colleges including BITS Pilani, VIT, MIT, NM, and Symbiosis.

The Math Club of HR College conducted its 9th edition of Flagship Event: Number Ninjas 2022. This was the first time that Math Club invited contingents to compete with each other for the trophy. Received over 150+ registrations from all over India from Dyal Singh College, Delhi, up north to NIT Trichy, down south. These included individual registrations as well.

NUMBER NINJAS
March 21, 2021

The Math Club of HR College conducted its flagship event - Number Ninjas virtually on a national level. Students from various colleges across the country participated, a few of them being - BITS Pilani, Jadavpur University, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIM Raipur, Thakur College and JBIMS.

MICROSOFT POWER BI
February 9 & 10, 2021

The Math Club of H.R. College organized a workshop on Microsoft power BI conducted in association with Dataskills. The speaker for the workshop was Mr. Karthik Dale, Founder DataSkills, Hyderabad.

It is a business intelligence tool that provides non-technical business users with tools for aggregating, analyzing, visualizing and sharing data. Power BI's user interface is fairly intuitive for users familiar with Excel and its deep integration with other Microsoft products makes it a very versatile self-service tool that requires little upfront training.

This workshop was open to both junior and degree colleges, with 200+ registrations received, out of which around 120 students attended on both the days. Students from more than 20 colleges participated in the event.

EVERYDAY MATH
November 22, 2020

The Math Club of H.R. College organized Everyday Math, an inter-collegiate mathematics quiz competition open to students of both junior and degree college. We received 330+ registrations for the same out of which around 200 students participated. Students from more than 5 universities and 20 colleges participated in the event. All students received Participation certificates from the college.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE & FINTECH
February 28, 2021

The Math Club of H.R. College organized a workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Fintech conducted in association with Zell Education. The speaker for the workshop was Mr. Jayantilal Bhanushali. Zell specialises in the Finance & Accounting domain and has also introduced Data Analytics with finance to assist students get placed in MNCs.

Artificial intelligence forms the basis for all computer learning and is the future of all complex decision making. Speaker pointed out that AI replaces the skill set, not the existing market. It changes the market dynamics.

SELF-ESTEEM: A Key to Future Success
August 29, 2019

Mr. Adrian Rosario, Founder, Infinity Consulting Services, Mumbai; commenced the seminar with a few ice-breaker questions, followed by a discussion on the idea of success. Mr. Adrian showed us videos, which revealed the true essence of being faithful to what you do. In order for success to follow, one must be dedicated and true to oneself. He threw light on the subject of a healthy, calm life but most importantly a happy life.

The Math Club organized their flagship event 'Number Ninjas 2019' which was attended by a number of math enthusiasts. The event was a four round elimination event, where a few participants would be eliminated after each round on the basis of their scores.

1st round 'Pen and Paper' round which consisted of tricky math questions.

2nd round 'Sudoku' round and participants were evaluated on their puzzle solving abilities.

3rd round 'Fun with Numbers Round' where participants played an innovative ‘housie’.

4th round 'Rapid Fire Round' - questions and answer round.

The one who bagged most points was crowned 'Number Ninja'.

APPLICATION OF MATHEMATICS & PREDICTIVE MODEL IN BANKING & INSURANCE

The Math Club of H.R. College organised a seminar with Mr. Yash Ratanpal, who is an alumnus of the college, working towards a qualification in actuary. He addressed the audience on the application of Mathematics in the area of finance. He delved in depth on the process of predictive modelling and discussed the key drivers for increased usage of predictive models.

Then a case study on Credit scoring model was introduced to understand the practical aspects of use of predictive models. It involved the process followed by banks to develop and implement the credit scoring model.
