The sole aim of the BFM Committee is to spread financial literacy by bringing forward a new perspective of learning, growing, and developing together.

Apart from that we also conduct various workshops and masterclasses wherein experts from National Stock Exchange, Bombay Stock Exchange, and various renowned institutions come in and share their knowledge.

In your journey of learning finance, we hope to be the last and the most important piece of the jigsaw puzzle and complete what has been missing.

ACTIVITIES 2023-2024

VISIT TO THE BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANG

Bachelors of Financial Markets Committee in collaboration with the with The Banking and Insurance Committee organized a visit to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on July 31, 2023 with 200 students from various courses from H.R College of Commerce & Economics.

The seminar was conducted on stocks and derivatives by a seasoned portfolio manager Mr. Rakesh Nair with over 20 years of experience at BSE Institute Limited. The insights and knowledge shared during this session were invaluable and offered a profound understanding of the intricacies of the financial markets. Mr. Nair highlighted the importance of equity and explained the trading sector. The event concluded with a group picture, cherishing the camaraderie and learning shared amongst the peers and mentors.

The students of BFM attended a "Talk and Fireside” session, organised under IMC - Pravinchandra V Gandhi Chair in Banking and Finance, JBIMS, University of Mumbai.

The session titled “Journey of financial services - rebirth of Bajaj Finance”, delivered by Chairman and Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv Ltd., and moderated by Mr. Amit Chandra, Chairperson of Bain Capital Advisors India Pvt. Ltd. was both informative and engaging. Mr. Sanjiv Bajaj shared valuable insights into the financial services industry, and his journey in particular.

Mr. Bajaj perspectives on the sector's evolution, challenges and opportunities were thought-provoking. Moreover, Mr. Amit Chandra’s moderation added depth to the discussion, and the interaction between the two speakers was dynamic and insightful.

A Seminar on 'Finance for All' organized by the BFM Committee in collaboration with the Placement Cell of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics. The session was delivered by Mr. Rishab Barar, A consultant at Citigate Dewe Rogerson Pvt. Ltd., He commenced the session by briefly describing the key points such as Percentages, Time value of money, and Personal Finance. He gave some examples of percentages to students and later he gave the questions to students to solve them. Later on, he explained how someone can manage and save some money every time starting from the very first income till their last income, and how much money would the student have left over before they retire. This was demonstrated using the example of earning and saving money in a bank via the concept of 'Annuity'. He had the students calculate the annuity sum under the assumption that they would start saving with Rs. 50,000 and finish up with Rs. 28 crores before they retire on an average rate of interest of 12% p.a. After giving an example to students Mr Rishab further explained about 'personal finance ' and how wisely investing in stock markets can help accumulate crores till the time of retirement. He also used Warren Buffet as an example to show how his cautious approach to stock market trading resulted in amassing a wealth of $1 billion. After that, a brief round of doubt-clearing followed, which marked the conclusion of the session.

An Industrial Visit to National Institute of Securities Market.

The BFM Committee of the HR College of Commerce and Economics organized an enlightening industrial visit to the National Institute of Securities Market (NISM) campus. The visit commenced with a formal campus visit following an engaging session on capital markets for 90 minutes, held in the well-equipped classroom of NISM. The session was facilitated by a seasoned financial expert who provided comprehensive insights into the functioning of capital markets. He discussed various aspects such as stock exchanges, trading, mechanisms, regulatory bodies, and different career opportunities in the financial sector.

Navigating the World of Mutual Funds

The exclusive seminar on "Navigating the World of Mutual Funds" was organized by BFM COMMITTEE in collaboration with Bvoc(WM) featuring Ms. Neha Goyani. It was an enlightening experience that left the students with a wealth of knowledge and insights into the world of finance and investment. The seminar covered a wide range of topics such as Real Estate, crypto currency, Gold and Gold ETF, and mainly Mutual Funds. Ms. Neha emphasized the impact of inflation rates in India and how they erode the value of our money over time. She also delved into the concept of time value for money, explaining why it's crucial to consider the opportunity cost of not investing. We explored various investment instruments and their real rates of return, as well as the optimum rate of return to expect from each.

FIN-PATH

The BFM Committee of H.R. College organized ‘FIN-Path’ a session on financial independence and career paths in finance after graduation.

The speaker for the session was Mr. Aswini Bajaj, CEO of Leveraged Growth. He guided students on career options in the field of finance and explained differences between the various professional courses like CA, CMS, CSA etc. Students gained a lot of insight and knowledge from this interactive session which ended with a formal vote of thanks.

OPPORTUNITIES AT GIFT-CITY IFSC FOR CAPITAL MARKET PARTICIPANTS

Students from H.R. College got the opportunity to attend a talk on ‘Opportunities at GIFT-City IFSC for Capital Market Participants’ at IMC (Indian Merchants Chamber of Commerce) in Churchgate. The speaker for the session was Mr. Dipesh Shah, Executive Director of IFSCA (International Financial Services Centers Authority).

Mr. Shah highlighted the important role that GIFT-City will play in the financial markets of India as well as the world. He emphasized the benefits that various players in the financial markets such as investment management funds, banks, insurance companies, investment banks etc., will reap due to attractive tax policies and incentives.

According to Mr. Shah, GIFT-City as a financial center will soon be at par with the financial centers of the world like Singapore and Dubai. All attendees found the talk very informative and interesting.

THE UN-HOLY GRAIL OF MEDIA MARKET AND SCAMS

The BFM Committee of H.R. College organized a webinar on, ‘The Un-Holy Grail of Media market and scams’ as a part of World Investor’s Week. The speaker for the session was Mr. Pratyush Bhaskar, a Multilingual Business Broadcast Journalist, Financial Trainer and Media Consultant. He is currently the Chief of content with Raa Media Pvt. Ltd. Production House. Mr. Bhaskar talked about the importance of investor awareness among the youth, millennials, and Gen Z. He enlightened the students about how SEBI deals with market manipulation and misinformation. He laid emphasis on financial literacy for students and how financial content regulation is required in today’s times.

INNOVATION IN PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

The speaker for the webinar was Dr. Sharan Kumar Shetty, Founder of Capital Advisors, an Associate Professor and Head International Relations and Member of Governing Body Member MSN Institute of Management-Mangalore.

IMPORTANCE OF DUE DILIGENCE BEFORE INVESTING
March 23, 2022

HR College celebrated 'Azadi ka Mahotsav' along with the Global Money Week theme, 'Learn, Earn and Save' in association with CDSL and Krisha Foundation.

This investor awareness program was on the topic of 'Importance of Due Diligence before Investing'. The offline session had fifty participants from across all the courses.

The speakers for the session were Mr. Yogesh Kundnani, the Assistant Vice President at Central Depository Services Ltd.(CDSL), and Mr. Sanjay Nunes, Senior, Assistant Manager at CDSL.

Mr. Nunes talked about the importance of doing due diligence before making investment decisions. He explained several dos and don'ts about investing in IPOs and the secondary market. He emphasized reading the IPO prospectus, not following rumours, and accumulating an emergency fund for uncertain times like the Covid crisis.

The session concluded with an interactive question and answer session with Mr. Kundnani answering all of the students' questions, like what to look for in an annual report, technical versus fundamental analysis, and much more.

The BFM Committee conducted a session on financial literacy for the non-teaching staff. The speaker for the session was Mr. Divyesh Rach, owner, and partner of Rach Insure Invest, a mutual fund distribution company.

Mr. Rach covered all the basics of investing in the stock market, from share ownership in a company to IPOs, SIP's and mutual fund pooled investments. He talked about the importance of allocating part of your income for saving and investment and establishing financial goals.

It was an interactive session with Mr. Rach clarifying all of the doubts and answering all of the questions of the staff members.

MARKET KA EKLAVYA PROGRAM
May 7, 2022

India's largest depository, National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) celebrated the completion of 25 glorious years of service to the Indian capital markets. On this momentous occasion Finance Minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman launched 'Market ka Eklavya,' an online investor awareness program for students in Hindi and other regional languages. She praised the enterprise and its initiative to be available and accessible to all students across India as the program will be available in many regional languages like Tamil, Kashmiri, Gujarati, etc. She proposed that the program be converted into foreign languages to launch it globally.

HR College got the opportunity to participate in the pilot study of the 'Market Ka Eklavya' project where 50 students attended and were a part of the five-hour certificate program, spread over two days. The program was exceptionally comprehensive and covered a wide array of topics about the financial markets that helped the students gain a sound understanding of the principles of finance. An internationally recognized certificate will be awarded on completion of the program.

After the two-day session, three students from the college had the privilege of attending the 25th Silver Jubilee celebration of NSDL. HR College was the only college from Mumbai invited to be present at the event. Colleges from all over India joined in virtually for the occasion.

THE BUSINESS OF ART AND NFTs
March 17, 2022

The BFM Committee and IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry conducted a session on “The Business of Arts and NFTs”. The moderator of the session was Ms. Akshita Gandhi, an International Artist, and Entrepreneur. The panelists included Mr. Rishiraj Sethi, Co-Founder Aura Art, Mr. Toshendra Sharma, Founder and CEO, NFTically, and Mr. Jamshed Mistry, Founder of International Legal Alliance.

In this live session, the highly experienced panel of speakers talked about NFTs and how one can gain exposure to it. They talked about art, its evolution, and the forms it takes which today include NFTs. It was a very interactive session wherein the speakers addressed the queries that participants had. More than 120 participants attended this session. The experience of the speaker helped the students learn many new things.

AN OVERVIEW OF FINANCIAL MARKETS
August 12, 2020

The Self - Finance Department organized a webinar by Mr. Kunal Rambhia, founder and Fund Manager, The Streets, who manages a hedge fund of INR 60 crores. He has been managing the fund for the past four years and provided a return of 103% Y-o-Y basis. 197 participants attended the session across all the self-finance courses.
At the outset, he showed the students the performance and trends of Sensex 30 since its inception. He then explained the importance of hedging their investments in order to make sure that they keep their risk limited. He explained the correlation between different indices and the GDP, and showed the chart on negative correlation between Nifty 50 and Small Cap Companies recently. He expects the Nifty 50 to correct and align itself with the Small Caps. He also told them about how he made a return of 29% in less than a month by going long on Silver.
He spoke about the P/E ratio of Nifty 50 and showed them its past trends with the help of info-graphics. He concluded that the current P/E ratio of Nifty 50 is at a life-time high of 30.65 and they are most likely to see the bears taking over from here.

STARTING YOUR INVESTING JOURNEY

The BFM Committee of H.R. College organized a session with esteemed speaker Ms. Shreemoyee Mukhopadhaya, an HR alumnus and ex-RBI associate, who is also in the process of getting her degree from the Wharton School of Pennsylvania. She has set up her own wealth management business and has worked previously with HR College as an advisor for various initiatives.
Ms. Shreemoyee highlighted the importance of investing, not just for the creation of wealth, but to ensure that time and inflation do not erode your wealth. She delved into the basics like mutual funds and SIP's, exchange traded funds and debt funds etc.
She advised the students to use brokerage platforms like Zerodha, HDFC etc. She emphasized on doing extensive research by using sites like investing.com, Wall Street Journal, Capital Market etc. She recommended sites like Zerodha Varsity and NSE Learning as places to get certificate courses that would equip you with the necessary skills to become a great investor.

MONEY WEEK
March 22– 28, 2021

Global Money Week is an annual global awareness-raising campaign on the importance of ensuring that young people, from an early age, are financially aware, and are gradually acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to make sound financial decisions and ultimately achieve financial well-being and financial resilience.

Taking inspiration from GMW motto 'Learn. Save. Earn.' the BFM Committee H.R. College of Commerce and Economics organised its very own Money Week in collaboration with non-profitable Public Charitable Trust - Krisha Foundation, the shining light in the domain of spreading financial literacy and investor awareness.

The money week was a roller coaster of 7 days filled with speakers from institutions like NSE, BSE, CDSL, and industry leaders, as well as competitions to test and apply the knowledge gained. From a session on financial literacy to overview of the markets to quiz competitions to an opportunity to develop the soft skills, the BFM Committee strived to help participants broaden their knowledge about finance.

1. Session on Financial Literacy
March 22, 2021

The BFM Committee conducted a session on financial literacy with Dr. Riya Nathani, who is a certified financial education trainer with SEBI. The speaker shed light on the importance of financial literacy, the ability to understand and effectively use various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting and investing. The participants learnt many new things including how a strong foundation of financial literacy can help support various life goals, such as saving for education or retirement, using debt responsibly, and running a business. The money week had a great start with the enthusiasm generated by this webinar.

2. Fundamentals of Capital Markets and Depository Services
March 23, 2021

The BFM Committee conducted a session on financial literacy with Yogesh Kundnani, Vice President, CDSL; with close to 25 years' experience in Capital Markets, and Sanjay Nunes, Assistant Manager, Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL). The speakers spoke about CDSL and emphasised on financial planning. They shed light on the need for saving, inflation and investment, investment criteria, functions of depository etc. The webinar concluded with a question answer session. The participants gained valuable insights through this webinar, which was well received by all.

3. FinQuest – Finance based Quiz Competition
March 24, 2021

Krisha Foundation and BFM Committee of HR College organised an intriguing 5-round quiz named Finquest. The topics covered were finance terminologies, current affairs, audio visual round, CEOs, and many more. The quiz experience was a learning one for both the BFM Committee and all of the participants. 4. Briefin - Consolidation & Condensation Competition
March 25, 2021

Briefin was an unique event during the Global Money Week wherein participants had to use their critical analysis skills to compile reports and condense 4-5 pages of information given into a single page. This event tested participants' power of grasping information and presenting it in a structured manner to convey most information, in the limited amount of space and time available.

5. Overview of Securities Market
March 27, 2021

The BFM Committee conducted a session on the securities market with Mr. Bharat Dave, Sr. Manager – BSE IPF. He has worked in various departments of BSE and has played a major role in transformation, from open outcry to BOLT (BSE Online trading).

The speaker talked about why one should invest, types of investment options, principles of healthy investments, do's and don'ts of investment, while giving us an overview of the securities market.

The webinar concluded with a question answer session on the four main types of security: debt securities, equity securities, derivative securities, and hybrid securities, which are a combination of debt and equity.

6. Stock Exchange and its Role in Capital Markets
March 28, 2021

The Money week concluded with a Valedictory Function graced by Ms. Rehana D'Souza, who spearheads the Business Development of NSE and leads the Financial Education and Awareness initiatives in the various domains of BFSI.

In this webinar on the stock market and its role in capital markets, the speaker with her expertise, did justice to the topic and explained how a stock exchange standardizes investments, allowing people to buy or sell discrete and equal shares of ownership in various companies. It facilitates the transfer of funds between investors and businesses, regulating as necessary to provide maximum safety for everyone's investments. The capital market is where companies go to raise financial capital (money) in general. The stock market is exclusively where investors trade stocks (shares of ownership in publicly traded corporations). Companies can raise money on the capital market by selling shares of stock in the company or by issuing bonds.

Rehana announced the results of the competitions FinQuest and BrieFin conducted during the week. The money week was one of the many successful initiatives by the BFM Committee that helped seed the knowledge of the financial markets.
