The Banking & Insurance Committee of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics acts as the built-in hub of research, information literacy, and schooling in the context of the banking and the insurance sector.

We intend to open the doorways to the practical world of banking and insurance, where students not only understand how the industry works as a whole but also prepare for a career in the corporate world.

INTERCOLLEGIATE WIN - BANKING NATIONALISATION DAY

We are delighted to report the remarkable achievements of Thakur College of Science and Engineering's Banking Nationalisation Day events on July 19, 2023. Our students’ participation was marked by excellence in two key events, showcasing both their dedication and expertise.

In the "Welcome to My Bank" event, Taksh Gajani and Vivan Wadhwa clinched the First position by their impeccable simulation of customer interactions, effectively highlighting their banking knowledge and unwavering professionalism. Satish Roy's analytical acumen secured us the Second position in the "Expose the Scammer" event, further underscoring our commitment to combat financial fraud.

These accomplishments truly exemplify the talent of our students and the institution's comprehensive educational approach. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the college administration, esteemed faculty members, and mentors for their consistent guidance and support.

VISIT TO THE BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANGE

The Banking and Insurance Committee in collaboration with the with Bachelors of Financial Markets Committee organized a visit to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on July 31, 2023 with 200 students from various courses from H.R College of Commerce & Economics.

The seminar was conducted on stocks and derivatives by a seasoned portfolio manager Mr. Rakesh Nair with over 20 years of experience at BSE Institute Limited. The insights and knowledge shared during this session were invaluable and offered a profound understanding of the intricacies of the financial markets. Mr. Nair highlighted the importance of equity and explained the trading sector. The event concluded with a group picture, cherishing the camaraderie and learning shared amongst the peers and mentors.

VISIT TO MONEY EXPO 2023

The Banking and Insurance Committee of H.R College of Commerce & Economics visited the Money Expo 2023: a very informative financial event showcasing the latest trends and innovations in the financial sector. The event was bustling with exhibitors and attendees. Various stalls featured cutting-edge fintech solutions, investment opportunities, and banking services. Experts delivered insightful talks on topics like blockchain, digital payments, and sustainable investments.

Students attended sessions of different stalls such as Enclave Fx, Pmsbazaar, Investment House, AI Trading, etc. Each one of them offered us highly innovative insights and knowledge. The expo also highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity in financial transactions. Networking opportunities were abundant, allowing students to connect with professionals in the finance industry. As the event concluded students captured the memorable day with a group picture, cherishing the camaraderie and the learning shared amongst peers and mentors.

Banking and Insurance Committee of H.R. College in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India organised an intercollegiate panel discussion: 4th GPFI under G20 Presidency with Reserve Bank of India. This gathering brought together students and faculties from renowned institutions, including H.R College of Commerce and Economics, Swami Vivekanand College, K.P.B Hinduja College, and Lala Lajpat Rai College.

The event was graced by Shri. Sudeep R, General Manager RBI; Shri. Sibo Nekhini, General Manager RBI; Ms. Geetha Nair, Deputy General Manager RBI and Smt. Simi Kakkar, Deputy General Manager RBI along with the bankers Mr. Deepak Patil from Bank of Maharashtra, Nilesh Vaidya from Bank of India and Gontla Balaji from State Bank of India.

The panel discussion was divided into two segments. The first segment focused on ‘Importance of Financial Inclusion in the Development of the country; challenges and opportunities for banks’ while the second segment focused on ‘Impact of Social Security Schemes and challenge in their Implementation.’ Expert opinions from banking sector added depth to the discussion.

All the panellists received tokens of appreciation from our chief guest, which was followed by a session by Office of the Banking Ombudsman, Mumbai. The event ended with a small quiz for the audience and a formal vote of thanks.

Webinar on “Forex & Hedging”

The Banking and Insurance Committee participated in Be A Banker Fest, a national-level competition hosted by Thakur College, representing HR College. H.R. College secured the Overall 2nd Runner Up Podium, competing with esteemed colleges from across India. The contingent was led by Satish Roy as the Contingent Leader, with Vanshika Chhangani and Ridhima Ahuja serving as Assistant Contingent Leaders. Their exemplary leadership, along with the dedication of the entire team, contributed to this remarkable success.

Social Initiative BIC x NSS

The Banking and Insurance Committee of H.R. College, in collaboration with the NSS, actively participated in the enriching Artshala Event organized by ConnectFor. This engaging event took place at Vinoba Bhave School, Kurla, where a diverse array of participants, including representatives from various colleges, committees, organizations, and even families, gathered to contribute to a noble cause. The day commenced with a prompt 10 am arrival at the designated location, followed by a comprehensive briefing provided by the coordinator of ConnectFor. The participants were enlightened about the essence of Artshala, which strives to transform schools into welcoming and cheerful spaces for students.

BANKING & FINANCE CONFERENCE AT BSE

June 16, 2022

The Banking & Insurance (BBI) students as well as the students of BAF Committee attended the Banking & Finance Conference at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

The conference began with an introduction of the risks associated with Data Protection & Data Security and the Changing Management by the Chairman of the Banking & Finance Committee, IMC and Former MD of SBI, Shri. Juzar Khorakiwala. This was followed by the speech of the Former CEO & MD of BSE, Mr. Ashishkumar Chauhan who briefed about the banking and financial sector over the past few years. He talked about the problems faced by India during the pandemic while highlighting the debt per capita GDP and how India fed 80 cr. people for almost 2.5 years.

Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Mr. Rajeshwar Rao gave a brief about the banking framework during the pandemic and the measures taken to strengthen the system followed by a panel discussion on the following topics:

Financial Institutions and their role in ESG
MSMEs - Opportunities & Challenges for MSMEs in the year ahead
The conference ended with the CEO Round Table on “Growth for the New India”.

SEMINAR - CAREERS IN FINANCE

August 5, 2022         Attendees: 150

H.R. College of Commerce & Economics attended a seminar organised by The Banking & Insurance Committee on Careers in Finance. The seminar theme was to provide insights into the finance sector and to discuss the opportunities that the finance sector provides.

The seminar started with the welcoming of guest speaker, Mr. Warren Remedios, who is currently an analyst at Blackstone. The speaker discussed how the finance industry operates and career prospects that the industry offers. He shared information about various entrance exams one can take, how to prepare for them, and the general trend of performance and results, courses available in the field of finance, and the required necessary skill sets for employment. The session ended with a very interactive Q&A and a formal vote of thanks.

CREDIT RATING AGENCIES IN TODAY'S GLOBAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM

Students from the H.R. College of Commerce & Economics attended a seminar on the role of credit rating agencies in the current global financial system, which was organized by the Banking and Insurance Committee.

The goal of the conference was to highlight the prospects offered by the capital market and to offer insights into the various credit rating schemes. Mr. Piyush Nagendra Pandey, our featured speaker, holds an MBA in Finance and is presently pursuing an LLB. Prior to receiving his degree, he began his career with businesses like Truebil and Olive. Mr. Nagendra has had extensive experience in the field of research for the oil and gas and telecommunications industries as well as with Crisil and ICRA, the two biggest research and ratings organisations in India.

Before presenting his expertise, the speaker provided a brief self-introduction that clarified for everyone how the finance sector functions. Then he discussed the many financial tools available in the stock market. He gave an overview of the concepts to use and the proper attitude to adopt when beginning to invest in shares.

He stressed on the need to have a reliable source - which serves as a gatekeeper - in order to invest in the market. He provided us with information on credit ratings, derivatives, insider trading, and due diligence, which allowed us to better grasp the capital market and how a firm's rating scale might influence one's decision to invest in that company. There was a Q&A session at the end to engage the audience and allow them a chance to ask the speaker further questions.

BOUNCE BACK STRONG

February 20, 2022         Attendees: 50+

Students from H.R. College of Commerce & Economics attended the workshop on “Bounce Back Strong: Building Workforce Resilience in Different Settings”. The workshop's goal was to shed light on what resilience is and how it influences our day-to-day lives.

Guest speaker Sarah Husain, a wellness coach in Germany, started the workshop by giving a quick self-introduction before beginning to describe her journey and the difficulties she had while coping with anxiety and stressful situations. The discussion was interactive, with participants sharing stories of stress-inducing situations and coping mechanisms.

The speaker made complex issues simple by engaging participants in enjoyable activities that improved confidence and taught the appropriate way to deal with issues that have an impact on mental health.

At the end of the session, the speaker inspired us by outlining what we should do next to strengthen resilience and how to move on with life while battling with negative thoughts.

BOOT CAMP ON PERSONAL FINANCE

February 28, 2023         Attendees: 50

A bootcamp on Personal Finance was held at H.R. College of Commerce & Economics to educate participants on the importance of personal finance, including how to invest wisely and manage their finances effectively.

The workshop was conducted by guest speaker Mr. Aakash Sharma, the founder of Neu Finesse. He shared his personal financial journey and the challenges he faced while managing his finances before discussing various investing options. This included talking about the best-performing IPOs, how the pandemic affected investors, and how to evaluate key metrics such as volatility, risk, and return, as well as P/E ratios. Mr. Sharma explained how to pick stocks and alternate investments, and he demonstrated a live demo session on how to buy stocks.

The conversation was interactive, with participants asking questions and participating in the discussion. There was also a Q&A round where students had the opportunity to win prizes worth Rs. 6,000, which could later be redeemed when opening a DMAT account. At the end of the session, the speaker inspired students by demonstrating the proper method to handle personal finances. The bootcamp was a huge success, providing an exhilarating opportunity for students to learn from an expert in the field.

PANEL DISCUSSION ON UNION BUDGET

March 2, 2023         Attendees: 50

Students from H.R. College of Commerce & Economics attended the panel discussion on “Demystifying the Union Budget”. The panel discussion’s goal was to help students understand the budget, various schemes by government and how they’ll develop our country, importance of tax, etc.

Our speakers CA Ritu Chaudhary and CA Poonam Pathak started the panel discussion by talking about “Amritkaal” and their insights on it. They discussed the Sagar Mala Project which is an initiative by the Government of India to enhance the performance of the country’s logistics sector. They also talked about the different types of budgets and their importance both economically and politically highlighting seven priorities of the budget inclusive development, reaching the last mile, infrastructure, and investment, unleashing the potential, green growth, youth power and financial sector.

At the end of the session, the speakers pointed out on how tax is important for everyone and how everyone should be honest tax payers to contribute towards overall development of the nation. Lastly it was followed by a question answer round where the speaker’s answered questions of the students about budget.

TALK SHOW ON FUTURE OF STARTUPS

March 4, 2023         Attendees: 30

Students from H.R. College of Commerce & Economics and students from various other colleges as well attended the Talk show on Future of Startups. Our host for the session introduced the speaker Mr. Arijit Bhattacharyya, founder of Virtualinfo.com.

The session began with the speaker giving a quick self-introduction about himself and then he started to describe his journey such as - difficulties faced during the beginning of his journey and the way to overcome those difficulties. The speaker discussed how India coped with the pandemic and the impact Covid-19 had on Indian economy and Indian startups. India has a healthy environment of India, how did Covid-19 affect Indian startups and many more. The session ended with a Q&A and a formal vote of thanks.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT

BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANGE

July 20, 2022         Attendees: 400

Students from H.R. College of Commerce & Economics visited The Bombay Stock Exchange along with the BBI Coordinator, Mr. Rahul Mishra, and Mr. Vicky Karnani.

The seminar commenced, with Mr. Rakesh Nair, a senior faculty member at The BSE Institute Ltd. giving a brief introduction of the International Conventional Hall, where the seminar was being held, and describing how it is a special location because it was once the exchange's trading floor almost two decades ago before trading went entirely electronic.

Mr. Rahul Ranadiv, Chief Business Officer at BSE Institute Ltd, spoke to the students about the importance of data science, which has grown significantly in the finance industry and is primarily used for better risk management and risk analysis.

The students were fortunate to have had the chance to tour one of the fastest stock exchanges in the world.

BASICS OF MUTUAL FUNDS & DEPOSITORY SERVICES
August 31, 2021

The Inaugural program of BIC was a webinar on Basics of Mutual Funds & Depository Services with Mr. Yogesh Kundnani, Senior Vice-President in CDSL (Central Depository Services India Ltd.), Ms. Reshma Verma, Investor Awareness Officer, CDSL, and Ms. Daksha Gogia, an Industry Expert and a trainer for Financial Literacy & Investor Education.

Ms. Reshma Verma gave us an insight on depository services and explained the need for savings, financial & investment planning, asset allocation, capital market, and many topics relating to depository services. Ms. Daksha Gogia explained the various aspects of mutual funds. She spoke about the process, types, and classification of mutual funds and explained why one should invest in mutual funds.

After a short Q&A session, Principal Dr. Pooja Ramchandani thanked the three speakers for their time and for enlightening the students on the subject.

FY- BBI Orientation
September 17, 2021

Mr. Prathmaish Sharma has been working with Deloitte Haskins and Sells in the Risk Advisory Function since July 2018. His prime area of expertise is Audits and Operational Process review in Banks and he specializes in the field of trade finance and SWIFT messaging systems.

The Presidents of the Banking & Insurance Committee introduced the Banking & Insurance Course. The course coordinator for Bachelors of Banking & Insurance, Mr. Rahul Mishra, briefly explained the curriculum. He introduced the Self-Learning Evaluation as well and explained how it is important for jobs relating to BFSI Sector. Mr. Rahul Mishra introduced Mr. Prathamaish, an Alumnus of the college, who shared his perspective about various job opportunities, which are available when one pursues BBI. Lastly, the second-year students of BBI gave a detailed overview of the subjects taught in the First and Second Semesters through a video presentation.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF MUTUAL FUNDS IN INDIA

Dr. Dimple Pandey holds a doctoral degree in Business Management and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A), in Finance. She has worked with companies like ICICI, OneSource, and JP Morgan Chase in the past. Dr. Dimple Pandey explained various concepts including Factors affecting the stock market, and the advantages and disadvantages of mutual funds. She gave us an insight into the risk and types of funds and the performance of mutual funds as well. Lastly, Dr. Dimple Pandey explained the do's and don'ts when investing in mutual funds.

IN THE SHOES OF AN INVESTMENT BANKER
October 30, 2021

An educational webinar on the insurance industry to enlighten the students was organised jointly with the BFM Committee. Dr. Rajinder Aurora has an experience of almost 37 years including 7 years in the corporate training field and shared his knowledge of investment and his experience as an investment banker.

Dr. Aurora explained the various factors one should consider while investing. He solved the doubts and queries of the students. The webinar ended with a vote of thanks to the speaker and the attendees.

CAREER IN BANKING AND INSURANCE
January 17, 2022

Mr. Vikas Sawant is the Founder and CEO of the Vikas Sawant Academy. He has secured second rank in Maharashtra state in the IBPS exam in 2010. He has 17 years of teaching experience and helped over 6,500 students successfully be placed in the banking and government sectors.

Mr. Vikas Sawant discussed career options in banking, insurance, and various other possible career choices after graduating with a degree of Bachelors in Banking and Insurance. The seminar concluded with a Q&A session.

WEBINAR ON THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY
February 19, 2022

The Banking and Insurance Committee (BIC) of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics conducted an educational webinar on the Insurance Industry for the students of BBI and BIC.

Mr. Mohamaad Ali Khan is a full-time employee at Integrated Risk Insurance Broker Ltd and is a Bachelors of Banking and Insurance student at HR College of Commerce and Economics. He spoke about his journey and the experiences he has gained and shared information about key areas of the Insurance Industry along with practical examples.

He suggested the students take up certificate courses and internships in the insurance industry to gain additional knowledge about the industry and be updated with news about the industry as well.

COMMERCIALIZATION OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS
March 5, 2022

Dr. Ankita Jain is an Intellectual Property & Management Consultant. She is an online trainer at Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Expert Trainer and Thesis Evaluator at UpGrad Education Pvt. Ltd., and Business Systems and Brand Strategist at Vivek Electroplast Pvt. Ltd.

The speaker Dr. Ankita Jain started with the introduction of Intellectual Property Rights, including its role, types of IPR, the structure of IPR in an organization, and various other concepts related to IPR.

The speaker provided an insight into the commercialization of IPR assets, forms of commercializing IPR as well as the platforms and tools used for IPR commercialization. The students gained knowledge on the topic of commercialization of IPR through the case studies discussed. Lastly, Dr. Ankita Jain explained the dos and the don'ts in case of the IPR Process.

IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry conducted the seminar at Sir Cowasji Jehangir Hall University, Fort, and Mumbai. The second-year students as well as members of The Banking and Insurance Committee of H.R. College attended the seminar representing the College.

The host welcomed the speakers who spoke of their association with Mr. Puri, introduced Mr. Aditya Puri, and then welcomed him on the stage. Mr. Aditya Puri during his speech spoke about different factors which had an impact on the banking system in India and covered all the current affairs (including the Russia-Ukraine war), which will have an impact on the banking system in India. He highlighted that fintech companies and banks should always come together to provide the best possible services to the customers. He spoke about the future of banking and predicted that the banking sector has a huge scope and after 10 years, is expected to be much bigger than what it is today. Lastly, he advised the students to do an extra course apart from just having a degree to stand out in today's world. After the insightful speech, there were questions asked by students addressed to Mr. Aditya Puri.
