WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT CELL
The two dynamic elements and change agents of this millennium are undoubtedly "Women" and "Youth." Recognizing this, the Women's Development Cell of H.R. College invited Eve Ensler, world renowned playwright and female activist for a dialogue with students and faculty of H.R. College as well as a group of 35 young girls from an NGO "AKSHARA" that works towards empowerment of women.

Eve Ensler, known for her famous play "Vagina Monologues" was in India for the global premiere of her new play "I am an Emotional creature: The secret lives of girls." She chose to make students, male and female, aware of issues pertaining to abuse of young girls from across the world. She urged the men to join the struggle to free & empower women. Mahabanoo Mody Kotwal and her son Kaizad Kotwal were also present at the dialogue session at H.R. College.

As part of its ongoing efforts to empower women from the less privileged sections of our society, the WDC along with SIFE HRC has helped a self help group of 20 women from the Machimaar Colony, Colaba, and have trained them to produce gift bags which are marketed for them by our students. Two other self help groups from the Worli & Dadar area showcased their products which WDC, at HR, helped them sell during the Diwali Season.

Prof. Sapna Malya regularly addresses women at the Y.B. Chavan Centres Home Management Program on basic financial planning and how to become a small time entrepreneur to augment the family income and raise one's self esteem as well.
An the Inter-Collegiate Debate Competition organized by WDC of K.C. College, Mumbai on 9th January, 2010 on 'Men cannot be Feminists' saw many male HR Students enthusiastically participate and put forward their view points.

In current times, many Indian women entrepreneurs have made their mark in the hitherto male dominated business management arena. WDC motivated students to undertake a study on Women Business Managers and Entrepreneurs of India. Using secondary data students prepared a group research project on "Women in Management - A movement from the fifties to the new millennium".

WDC tied up with the college NSS cell and organized a half day workshop on Gender sensitization at the NSS camp. Various issues relating to gender equality, gender sensitization and women empowerment were raised and discussed at length. The college students gave a presentation to the villagers on the setting up and operation of the MAHILA BACHAT GAT, a micro finance project supported by the government.

Amercian thinker and philosopher R.W. Emerson said, "Women are by their power of conversation and their social influence the civilizers of humankind." He believed that women are the bastions of civilization and culture and the WDC of H.R. College supports these sentiments and continues its two fold efforts - to empower women and sensitize men from all segments of society towards ensuring a fair and a happier tomorrow.
