
ABOUT
The H.R. College of Commerce & Economics Library started in 1960. Over
the last 40 years, the Library has developed a multifaceted collection
of around 50000 books. Our strength is well- abridged collection of
Management, Marketing, Advertising, Economics and Travel & Tourism.
Since beginning Library is subscribing around 90 Journals per year and
maintained the ratio in today's expensive era. We are quite lucky to
have book lovers - Principal Malkani and Principal Gidwani who had
supported library whole heartedly and helped to develop a quality
collection.
College library is adorned with state of art facilities. In keeping with
the times, the library has been thoroughly revamped with an
air-conditioned reading room. It supports the mission of the college and
is committed to providing information leading towards excellence in
commerce and business education. The HR library is also committed to
help students gather multifaceted knowledge and thereby facilitate the
process of knowledge revolution and overall and holistic personality
development.
LIBRARY COLLECTION
The library has a collection of more that 50,000 books on every
conceivable subject - in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Sindhi. The
library subscribes to Indian as well as foreign journals to keep the
users abreast with the current knowledge on various subjects. Annually
we receive 14 multilingual newspapers and 74 periodicals. Of these, 51
periodicals are for the various subjects taught in college and the rest
are of general interest. It also has a collection of Audio-Visual
materials, CD Roms, Floppies, maps etc. The library displays newly
arrived books in a show case. These are changed
every week/fortnight. Books related to specific themes are displayed on
different occasions.
LIBRARY TIMINGS
The library is kept open throughout the year for 12 hours (8.00 a. m. to
8.00 p. m.) except on Sundays and Public Holidays. However, it also
functions by special arrangement for 7 hours (10.00 a. m. to 5.00 p. m.)
on Sundays and Public Holidays to provide facility of reading to the
students before and during examinations.
SPECIAL CLASSROOMS are kept open as study rooms from 8.00 p.m. to 11.00
p.m. before and during examinations.
For discussions/project work, the Penthouse on the terrace is made
available to students from 8.00 a. m. to 6.00 p. m.
LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP
Every bonafide student of this College may become a member of the
library. No library fee is charged. A Library Borrower's Card is issued
to every student on submitting the identity card and the First Term Fee
Receipt. These Borrower's cards will be maintained in the Library. An
ex-student may be allowed to use library facilities after obtaining
permission from the Principal and becoming member of the Alumni Association.

USE OF BOOKS
Before entering the Open Access Section of the library one should keep
his/her belongings out on the racks provided. Readers are requested to
use the books with care. They should not do any marking with pen or
pencil in the books, nor should they fold pages nor try to remove pages
from books and magazines or take unissued material out of the library.
For serious study a calm and peaceful atmosphere is necessary and we therefore, request the readers to help us maintain such an atmosphere in
the Library. Students should refrain from causing disturbance to others
or else they will be denied access to library facilities. Library is
strictly a NO MOBILE ZONE. Students should switch off their mobiles
before entering the main gate of the Library.
RE-ISSUE OF BOOKS
The books must be returned to the library on the date marked on the date
slip at the end of the book. As a rule, a book will not be re-issued on
the day on which it is returned. It may be issued next day, if here is
no other claimant for if.
BOOKS FOR INTERNAL READING
A considerable number of textbooks, help books for various examinations,
Non Book Material and journals are kept apart for internal reading in
the Reference Section. The material from Reference Section must not be
taken out of the Library under any circumstances and should be returned
on the same day before 6.00 p.m. In case the material is not returned on
the same day a fine of Rs. 5/- , shall be charged, If the same is not
returned on the next day the default will be reported to the Principal.
DAMAGES AND LOSS
Every borrower is supposed to check the pages of the book before getting
it issued. The last borrower shall be held responsible if the book is
found damaged. If a borrower loses the hook he/she shall have to replace
the book. If it is not available in the market then the borrower shall
have to pay the market price plus replacing charges.
PENALTIES FOR DEFAULTS
The fine for overdue books will be
Rs. 1.00/day for first overdue week
Rs. 2.00/day for second overdue week
Rs. 5.00/day for next period of overdue.
For reference books the fine would be Rs.5.00/day.
TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP
The membership of the library will he cancelled immediately if a person
is found guilty of violating willfully the rules and regulations of the
library. Facility of issuing books for home reading can be suspended if
a borrower is in the habit of retaining hooks overtime.
CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE
At the end of the second term all books must be returned to the library.
However by special provision, books would be issued during examination
period. The Librarian will issue a 'NO DUE CERTIFICATE' to borrower who
has cleared his/her account. This is necessary for obtaining the refund
of Student Deposit from the College Office.
LIBRARY SERVICES
AC READING ROOM
The library has fully air conditioned Reading Room with a MEZANINE FLOOR
for silence study. Special classrooms are kept open as study rooms from
8.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. before and during examinations. For
discussions/project work, the Penthouse on the terrace is made available
to students.
OPEN ACCESS
By providing open access to the entire collection to all its members,
the library offers complete access to treasure-house of information and
reference literature. It helps the users to browse through at leisure
and select the book of choice.
COMPUTERISED CATALOGUE
The library has a computerized catalogue of its entire collection which
facilitates the users to search books via different access points like
author, title, keyword or publisher in fraction of seconds. The library
uses a user friendly, menu driven, and highly interactive software i.e.
SLIM 21 developed by Algorythms Consultants, Pune a certified partner of
Microsoft.
LIBRARY ORIENTATIONS
The library is already equipped with guidelines, displays, and of course
the cheerful, ready-to-help staff, which makes utilisation of the
library an easy and enjoyable experience. In addition, Library
Orientations are held for new students (especially for Jr. College
students) on a regular basis to make them aware about library's
activities/procedures. Library is open for all suggestions,
recommendations, etc. All the complaints are handled personally and
immediately. Library orientation in powerpoint format is available
throughout the year on library terminals which guides the students about
library and its services.
DISPLAYS
The library displays newly arrived books in a showcase. These are
changed every week/fortnight. Books related to specific themes are
displayed on different occasions. Students' projects, Foreign
Colleges/Universities' Brochures and other interesting material are also
displayed from time to time.
BOOKBANK
Every year the library issues sets of textbooks to degree college
students for a whole academic year. The facility is available for
economically backward students.
LIBRARY EVENTS
Library organizes themewise displays, book exhibitions, booktalks on a
regular basis. The library also conducts various faculty development
programmes, seminars and workshops for inhouse and outsiders. It also
provides guidance to other colleges about NAAC preparation,
computerization, library development and promotion.
LANGUAGE LAB
To enhance the user's language skills the library provides special
language library. It offers self explanatory course in English, French,
Hindi and advanced English with the help of audio cassettes. Users can
utilize the linguaphone to rectify ones' bloomers -- by hearing
themselves speaking the language and speak fluently.
MULTIMEDIA SECTION
The library also has a moderate collection of audio/visuals on various
topics. It has 638 non book material available in the form of audio
cassettes, VCds, etc. on various subjects like Education, Management,
Personality Development, Travel and Tourism, etc.
TEACHING LEARNING MATERIALS CENTRE
The Teaching Materials Centre (TLMC) is a curriculum laboratory which
provides resources aimed at improving the teaching and learning process.
The TLMC collection has activity guides, simulation games, cassettes,
slides, curriculum guides, multimedia kits, video discs etc.

EVENTS
Golden Jubilee "Back to College" celebration for alumni
The college is celebrating its Golden Jubilee Year 2009-2010. As a part
of the celebrations, a grand exhibition was held in the Library Reading
Room on September 5, 2009 for the alumni. Voyagers, prospectus and
college reports from 1960 to till date were displayed. A photo gallery
was created in the library. The library provided photocopy and
photography facility to alumni to store their valuable memories for the
future. The display got overwhelming response from the alumni and they
thanked the library staff for preserving and reproducing the golden
memories of past years.
Book Exhibitions
i) On the occasion of Golden Jubilee Year of the college, the library
has organised *Two days Book Exhibition cum Sale* on November 10-11,
2009. It was inaugurated by the Sheriff of Mumbai and Principal Dr.
Indu Shahani. More than 4000 books and CDs on variety of subjects were
displayed. The event was appreciated by all the visitors, teachers and
students.
ii) The library has organised *Half day Book Exhibition cum Sale* on
March 11, 2010 for unaided courses. The faculties of these courses gave
overwhelmed response and admired such a specialised event. The other
departments also requested the library to conduct their respective
subject special exhibitions in future.
LIBRARY DEVELOPMENTS
Library became solar
A Solar Power Generating System for library reading Room was inaugurated
by Mr. Ratan Tata on March 8, 2010. The project is designed by Tata BP
Solar India Ltd. and is funded by KPMG Foundation. The system is low
maintenance and has three day no sunshine autonomy. It helps to save
1400 watts per day.
Up gradation of Library Software:
New update for SLIM software was installed on November 6, 2009 for
speedy retrieval of information and to provide efficient services to the
users.
Color Code System
Inspired by London School of Economics, Library initiated colour code
system for easy and fast retrieval of reference books and borrower cards.
Promotions of the staff
Ms. Pooja Garde, the Library Attendant, has been promoted as a Junior
Clerk and Mr. K. Misra, the Library Peon, also got his promotion as a
Library Attendant on August 3, 2009.
New Additions
Library subscribed total 70 journals and 17 Newspapers and added around
794 books during 2009-10.
Library Membership
Total 1587 students became library members during 2009-10.
About 30 Ex-students availed day and night library reading room facility.
About 25 students of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)
availed the library reading room facility on an institutional request basis.
Library continued its institutional membership with BCL and American
resource Center.
A number of faculty members and students benefited from Inter Library
Loan Service and availed library facilities from IGIDR, K.C. and K.C.
Law College libraries.
LIBRARY CONSULTANCY
Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) Service:
The Librarian effectively provided details for about 112 reference
queries on various topics to the college faculty as well as outsider
clients such as HDFC, Sydenham College, Jaihind College, Thakur College,
etc.
NAAC Consultancy
The Librarian Dr. Madhuri Tikam, provided consultancy for NAAC
reaccreditation procedure to
Ms Ruhi, Librarian of Sant Gadage Maharaj College, on June 8, 2009.
Dr. Aruna Narayanan, professor of Hinduja College on July 26, 2009.
Ms. Nilambari Chavan, Librarian of Khalsa College in the months of
April-June 2009.
Vice Principal and three professor of B.T.T.C. on November 16, 2009.
Library Consultancy
Mrs. Pournima Joshi, Librarian of K. C. Law College visited the
Library on May 11, 2009 for innovative ideas about computerized library
services.
Mrs. Manpreet Kaur, Reader and HOD of Hindi Department, Gurunanak
College, Sion visited the Library on May 21, 2009 to collect ideas about
various library services for remedial courses.
Guidance on "Development of Library Staff" was provided to Ms.
Ligimol Benny, Librarian of MMK on June 8, 2009.
Ms. Nilambari Chavan, Librarian of Khalsa College took timely
guidance about innovative library services and collection development.
Ms. Neelima Balachandran, Librarian of SIES (Nerul) College and her
two library staff members were guided about innovative and efficient
library services on February 24, 2010.
Paper Presented
Librarian, Dr. Madhuri Tikam, presented a paper on "Best Practices in
Academic Libraries" in a one day Seminar at Nagrik Shikshan Sanstha's
College of Education , Tardeo on September 19, 2009.
Other:
Librarian, Dr. Madhuri Tikam, was twice invited on the interview
panel of HSNC Board to conduct interviews for the post of Librarian in
other colleges of the Board.
Dr. Madhuri Tikam was called for Centralized Paper Assessment (CAP)
for B.L.I.Sc. & M.L.I.Sc. course papers on "Information Technology" by
S.N.D.T. Women's University on December 22 & 24, 2009.
