INVESTMENT CLUB OF H.R. COLLEGE (ICHR)
BOLLYWOOD STOCK EXCHANGE : The Investment Club of H.R. College sought to combine cinema and the stock market, two of the biggest crazes in the country today, with the launch of 'BOLLYWOOD STOCK EXCHANGE (BSE)' - its first event of the academic year 2009-2010. The B.S.E. held on 28th July, 2009 witnessed more than 150 investors including the college Vice Principals and some very senior faculty members of the college. Investors were in teams of two and each team had a notional amount of Rs.10 lakhs which they could invest in the five famous actors of bollywood namely, Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Aishwarya Rai. The event was flagged off by the Hon'ble Sheriff of Mumbai and our respected principal Dr. Indu Shahani, as she listed the actors on the B.S.E. The event considered ups and downs of these actors for the years 1998 - 2008.
ICHR members acted as underwriters/brokers/bankers and saw to it that the trading was carried out smoothly. The event focused on making the students understand the basics of the following:
- IPO
- Listing & Delisting
- Secondary Market Trading
- News driven analysis
- And all the tricks of trade in the stock markets
Trading continued for about 2 hours and each investor was engrossed and concentrated on achieving the highest net worth. Constant and consistent surprises kept everyone alert.
HOLLYWOOD STOCK EXCHANGE : A replica of Bollywood Stock Exchange was done to give a feel of Indian stock markets to the international students visiting H.R. College under the UKIERI Study India Program. Shares of Hollywood actors and actresses were issued, listed & traded on the ‘Hollywood Stock Exchange.’ Their films, scandalous behaviour and an Oscar decided their fate to make them the ‘King or Queen of Hollywood.’ Some of the prominent actors like Hugh Grant, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Angelina HOLLYWOOD STOCK EXCHANGE Jolie, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were traded. All the foreign students were provided with a notional amount of £ 1,000,000/- for the purpose of trading. The trading was based completely on the news pertaining to these actors for the period of 1998 - 2008. As the students were from different fields like medical, business etc., they took a few minutes to get acquainted to the game and then enjoyed it thoroughly.
PANEL DISCUSSION ON “HAS THE RBI OVERDONE THE LIQUIDITY INFUSION IN THE INDIAN ECONOMY?” : ICHR in co-ordination with AIESEC had organised a panel discussion on 8th August, 2009 in the Conference room of the college. It was a brilliant discussion by some of the renowned people in the banking, insurance and the financial sector. This was witnessed by over 150 students from the BCom, BAF, BBI, BFM and the BMS. Some of the panelists participating in the discussion were Mr. Himanshu Shah, V.P., Citi Group, Mr. Nakul Zaveri, Principal Consultant & Head, Climate Change Capital, Vice Presidents from SBI and SBI Capital Markets and our very own faculty of H.R. College, Mr. Vishal Shah, Manager - Treasury, ICICI Bank. The session was concluded by a brilliant Q & A.
BSE VISIT : This year the club organized a unique experiential learning trip for its members to Bombay Stock Exchange on Thursday,10th December, 2009. It was an attempt made by the club to make its members understand the capital markets and the working of the stock exchange. They were also briefed about the Indian economy and history of the stock exchange in the lecture organized at the BSE Institute. Students were able to see the trading ring where trading used to take place during the outcry system which existed before the introduction and use of computers in thetrading processand the dematerialization of shares. This trading ring is now the modern Convention hall of BSE where companies coming up with IPO’s are officially listed on the stock exchange by hitting the gong.
CEREBRUM TINGLER – THE MANAGEMENT QUIZ : Like every year the club organised the management quiz which had interesting rounds. The quiz was conducted in teams of two and around 18 teams participated. There were two elimination rounds and then there were rounds like the buzzer round, guess the brand, connect the pictures and finally the rapid fire. The winners of the quiz were students from T.Y.BMS - Ashish Toshniwal and Aneesh Gangwal, followed by Abhinav Upadhaya and Manoj Thadani from S.Y.BFM as the first runner up and the second runner up were students from F.Y.BMS - Rudreshwar Malkani and Jay Sangoi.
INVESTOFUND : The committee members of the Club took a step ahead this academic year to get hands on experience on the mutual fund management. They started a fund of their own called the ‘Investofund.’ They not only tracked the financial markets but also
contributed actual money to invest in the equity markets. This fund came into existence on 4th December, 2009 with an investment of Rs.15,000. The members of this fund acted like fund managers and studied various sectors where they could invest their money. They went through the ups and downs of the highly volatile markets during the period of about 3 months. They invested in stocks like NTPC, Suzlon, Indian Hotels, JP Associates etc. Major market events such as the Quarter 3 Financial result announcements, the RBI policy announcements and the annual financial budget happened during this period. Whatever fund was pooled in, was divided into no. of units of Rs.10/- each. The valuation of the portfolio was weekly reviewed and a NAV was calculated. The all time high NAV for the fund was Rs.11.60 and its low was Rs.8.70. Its NAV at the academic year end was Rs.10.20. It was a thrilling experience for the fund managers as it enabled them to understand the reactions of the market to positive or negative news.
MONETA – INTERCOLLEGIATE PODAR COLLEGE EVENT : This year the club members participated in the Capital Market event – ‘Moneta’ organized by Podar college, Mumbai. This event was mainly attended by Postgraduate colleges from all over India. H.R. College was adjudged as the ‘Best Undergraduate College’ for its excellent participation and for giving a strong competition to all the B-School participants. The club sent two teams of 11 members each and events they won were.
- IPO challenge won by Amishi Shah & Akriti Grover bagging the 2nd place
- Mutual fund presentation won by Trisha Mittal & Vrinda Poddar bagging the 1st place
- Guess the brand - brand equity – Nasha Dubash and Brijesh Bhattad - 1st place
- Board room challenge won by Prateek Trehun - 2nd place
- Treasure hunt - 2nd place won by Shrutika Arora and her team
